In a classroom this afternoon, a 15-year-old boy was showing off a handgun to14-year-old Tara Pontello. He had taken out the magazine clip and cocked the gun, believing the gun to be empty. However, there was still one bullet in the chamber. Tara told the boy to put the gun away because accidents can happen. The boy took her key ring and told her she had to cry before he would put the gun away. She rested her head on her desk and pretended to cry when the gun accidentally went off. The bullet ripped through her buttocks, damaged her uterus and vagina and then exited her left leg. Our young instigator looked at Tara in surprise and ran out of the room. Tara, a Grade 9 student, was taken to a hospital, underwent surgery and is listed in serious condition. The boy was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

This afternoon at the old South High School, a Volney Rogers Youth Football League game between the Titans and the Sons of Thunder was held, complete with cheerleaders. The tournament attracted nearly 800 people. While the game was in progress, 31-year-old Larry D. Jones and 25-year-old Anthony M. Coulton, also known as Anthony Pfeifer were fighting on Erie Street over an unknown topic. Larry wasn't fairing to well in the fight so he walked over to the stadium where he believed he would be safe in the crowd. Unfortunately, Anthony had followed Larry onto the stadium's walkway in front of the grandstands. Larry punched Anthony who retaliated by drawing a 9mm handgun and shooting Larry several times. It was around 3:45 when the shooting began. Larry jumped over the fence and on to the field to get away from Anthony, but he followed him and chased him down to an area near the sidelines. There Anthony shot Larry several more times before fleeing the stadium. Cheerleaders as young as four witnessed the shooting. Larry was rushed to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he died later in the day. When the police arrived, witnesses said they didn't want to get involved and it was tough to build a case. Eventually, the police were able to piece together a case from the reports they did receive and issue another warrant for Anthony, who already has a criminal record. In January he was charged with possession of cocaine. After a rap concert at the Eastwood Mall Expo Center in Niles in April 2004, Anthony and four other men were arrested for nearly starting a riot. After he was handcuffed, he wasn't secured in the police car and walked away. He was re-apprehended and charged with escape. In October of 2004 he was found guilty of the escape. Six weeks later, on October 2, 2006, Anthony was captured in a house in Bremerton, Washington, on Puget Sound near Seattle.

On the fourth day of the new school year, Blake Sales drove his dark blue SUV to school. He arrived just before 7:30, but unfortunately, he never stepped foot into the school. The junior met up with a friend and gave him a note. The friend showed the note to a couple of other boys and they realized that Blake was suicidal. They followed him back to his SUV. He was already inside and had pulled out a small-caliber handgun. Blake then shot himself in the head. The boys heard the shot, raced to the SUV, opened the door, saw what Blake had done to himself and ran for help. The school nurse attempted CPR on Blake before emergency personnel rushed him to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville. Blake died at 12:30 p.m.

Essex Elementary School, Essex, Vermont
Thursday, August 24, 2006
A domestic dispute turned horribly tragic for the community of Essex today. First-grade teacher Andrea Lambesis broke up with Christopher Williams last night. Shortly after midnight this morning she called police telling them she and her boyfriend fought, then broke up and that he had taken her car to go to work. Police began looking for Christopher. In the morning, Andrea called police again telling them her car had been returned, but she had not seen her estranged boyfriend. Christopher was distraught over the breakup with Andrea. Later in the day he goes back to the home they share with her mother, Linda Lambesis, and kills the innocent woman with a .45-caliber pistol. Linda was a second-grade teacher at St. Albans Town Educational Center. He then went looking for Andrea at her work: Essex Elementary School. Christopher is unable to find Andrea at the school and takes his anger out on second-grade teacher Alicia Shanks by shooting her in the back. By now it was 2:10 in the afternoon and Alicia is dead. School was not in session, but teachers and administrators were there preparing for the start of classes next week. He also wounded first-grader teacher Mary Snedeker. He then moved on to a condominium complex on Jericho Road, to the home of Chad Johansen, a friend of Andrea's, and the owner of the .45-caliber pistol. Christopher had asked to borrow it earlier, telling Chad that he wanted it because someone owed him money. Christopher tracks down Chad and the two men argue. The argument climaxes when Christopher shoots Chad in the hand and forehead. Christopher then shot himself twice in the head, miraculously, the wound is not fatal. Police received a call from classroom B-8 saying a teacher in the neighboring classroom had been shot in the back. They rushed to the school and, according to very early reports, cornered the shooter at the school. Very early reports also said that his/her accomplice had fled the scene, going north on Vermont state highway 128. Both of these reports turned out to be false. The police were able to reach Mary and transport her in a police car to a waiting ambulance. Chad, Mary and Christopher were all transported to Fletcher Allen Health Care Hospital in Burlington for treatment. Two hours later, police had apprehended Christopher on a lawn between the condos and a nearby greenhouse business. He is charged with murder and attempted murder. These charges were added to his already long Massachusetts rap sheet.

Friends who were interviewed by news reporters said that a 21-year-old male student and his 19-year-old girlfriend were a "happy" couple. Apparently this "happy" couple wasn't all that "happy" as they recently broke up. This afternoon, the day before classes start, the girlfriend went to her boyfriend's dorm room on the ninth-floor of Vanier College with a knife in her hand. She stabbed her former beau in the back and shoulder. She then slashed her own throat. The unnamed boyfriend fled the room and was able to notify campus security about this stabbing. Campus security in turn called the Toronto police at 2:40 p.m. When they arrived, the police found the boyfriend near the main gates. He led them to his room where they found her bleeding profusely. The couple was taken to Humber River Regional Hospital on Finch Avenue for treatment. Later, the co-ed was transferred to Sunnybrook because her injuries were so severe. Police did not release the names of the couple and said that no other students were in danger as this was a domestic dispute.

Around 1:20 this afternoon, the school monitor and school security initiative officer Gabe Medrano were informed that gang members were on the campus of South Hills High. The two school officials spotted the gang members, a group of ten teens, near the baseball fields. They approached the gang members and Gabe began to question 17-year-old Edward Campbell. The gang member got irritated with the questioning and Gabe attempted to detain him. While Gabe was putting the handcuffs on the gang member, his brother rallied the rest of the group to jump Gabe and the school monitor. A physical fight ensued, during which, Gabe was able to draw his service weapon and fire one shot. The bullet struck a 15-year-old Edgar Ramirez in the chest. He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital for treatment. Other police officers arrived and were able to detain several of the gang members. Gabe also went to the hospital for treatment of the injuries he received during the fight. After this situation was diffused, another fight between students broke out in another area of the school. The participants in the second fight sustained minor injuries and it was not clear if it is in relationship to the first fight. The next day, Edgar was released from the hospital. Police then arrested him and three of the gang members, charging them with engaging in organized crime and assault.

School violence makes its first stop to the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda today. Actually this is a misnomer as the news story reports that acts of violence have happened before on the two islands; this is just the first time I've been able to see the story in the newspaper. Last night a fight broke out between a second form male student, 15, and a 17-year-old fourth former student, also a male, in computer class. The fighters were separated and school officials hoped the matter was settled. This morning, they found themselves in the wrong as the two teens renewed the fight. During this morning's fight, around 8:30, the younger boy used a pair of scissors and stabbed the older boy in the right hand. The older boy retaliated by stabbing the younger boy in the shoulder and back with his own pair of scissors. The ruckus was overheard by the school's janitor who tried to intervene and separate the two young combatants, but he was stabbed in the left hand and had have to five stitches put in to close the wound. Police plan to charge the boys with wounding. The whole situation could have been averted if the Ministry of Education had acted on information from three former heads about the problem of gangs in school. Unfortunately, the schools received no response to their letters.

Dawson College, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Wednesday, September 13, 2006
In the heart of downtown Montreal lies Dawson College. This afternoon at 12:41 p.m., it joined my list of school violence at colleges in this great Canadian city. (University of Montreal École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989 and Concordia University on August 24, 1992 are the other two.) Kimveer Gill, 25, posted many pictures of himself aiming a rifle at the camera and wielding a knife on vampirefreaks.com. Earlier this morning, he added a blog saying that he liked to play an Internet role-playing game about the Columbine massacre and that he was drinking whiskey. The last post was at 10:41 a.m. This afternoon students at Dawson College described him as a black trench coat-wearing, rifle-totting, Mohawk haircut man with jewelry-pierced skin when he opened fire on the students as they milled about outside the school. Kimveer then walked in the front door of the college and made his way up to the second floor cafeteria. There he continued to fire upon the helpless students with his rapid-fire rifle and two other weapons. Teachers ran down the hall telling the students to stay in their classrooms. The students who could flee the school flooded the streets seeking a safe haven. Police arrived on the scene and cornered Kimveer behind a vending machine. Police cautiously tried to advance on Kimveer's position, but he kept yelling at them to: "Get back! Get back!" Other students were still in the cafeteria at this time waiting the out come of the standoff. Police then took the bold step of firing everything they had at Kimveer. The barrage of bullets ended with Kimveer dead on the cafeteria floor. The whole thing lasted 30 minutes. However, in that time, Kimveer had already wounded 20 students, one of which is Jessica Albert. Eleven of the wounded students were taken to Montreal General Hospital. Five of them were male and six of them were female. The other nine were taken to two other hospitals where 18-year-old Anastasia De Sousa died. The college closed for the rest of the week and welcomed the students and faculty back on Monday, September 18, 2006. Classes resumed the following day. As news of the Montreal shooting spread across the world, the authorities in Creve Coeur, Missouri, received word to look out for Austin Vincent, a suicidal 17-year-old male student. Austin, a senior, sent a text message to a friend of his telling the friend that he was going to kill himself. Austin did not go to school today, but he ended up there later this afternoon. The friend told his teacher, who notified school administrators. The administrators called the police. The officers were about to begin searching for the troubled teen when they received word he was now at the school, well after the classes had dismissed and most of the students had gone home. When the police arrived, Austin was sitting on the curb with a rifle to his head. One of the officers began talking with Austin. During the conversation, he pointed the rifle at the police officers. They told him to drop the rifle. When Austin refused, one of the officers shot him in the leg and ended the standoff around 3:45 p.m. Austin was taken to St. John's Mercy Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

Last night the Black Student Union sponsored a dance at Duquesne University. Kenneth "KJ" Eason called 19-year-old sophomore Brittany Jones and asked her if he and his brother, Jeremiah "J" Jones could attend the dance. She is active in the Black Student Union and said they could. Kenneth and Jeremiah arrived, along with four friends, just after midnight. As they walked to the dance Brittany found out that some of young men were packing heat. They asked her if they would be patted down at the entry to the door. She asked the doorman, Richan Gaskins, if he was searching people. He told her no. She went back to Kenneth and his friends and told them they wouldn't be searched, so all seven walked right in. During the dance, Brittany received quite a bit of attention from several Duquesne basketball players. Kenneth became jealous when Brittany talked to one of the players. The dance broken up in the early morning hours of today. As the players were returning to their dorms, Kenneth and his entourage followed them. Brandon Baynes and William Holmes, both 18 and members of the entourage, pulled out their guns, a .9mm and a .38-caliber hand gun, and opened fire on three of the players. Kojo Mensah was shot in the shoulder, Stuard Baldonado was shot in the back and Sam Ashaolu was the most critically wounded of the players with a gunshot wound to his head. Two more basketball players rushed to their teammates aide, but they were also shot. Shawn James was shot in the left foot, but no bones were broken. Aaron Jackson was shot in the hand. In all nearly a dozen shots were fired and five players were wounded, one critically. Kenneth, his entourage and Brittany, quickly fled the campus. Aaron was able to pickup Stuard and drive him to Mercy Hospital for treatment. The next day, police arrested Brittany on charges of reckless endangerment, carrying a firearm without a license and criminal conspiracy. Even though she knew that members in the entourage were armed, she still help them get into the dance. On Tuesday police arrested Brandon Baynes and William Holmes for shooting the basketball players. They are charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, carrying an unlicensed firearm and criminal conspiracy. Two days later, police dropped all charges against Brandon after a witness recanted her story. However, on the positive side of things, police arrested Derrick Lee and Erica R. Sager. Police say Derrick is 18 or 19 years old (I'm classifying him as 18 for my records) and charged him with five counts of attempted homicide and aggravated assault. Erica was charged with five counts of aggravated assault and criminal solicitation. Duquesne is a private Catholic institution with nearly 10,000 undergraduates in the heart of Pittsburgh.

This morning at 9:50 a.m., 17-year-old Thaddeus J. McDonald plunged a syringe into a 15-year-old classmate as the two stood in one of the school's hallways. The injured student did not report the stabbing to school authorities. However, he did tell his mother when he saw her later in the day. She called the police just after 7 p.m. and they arrested Thaddeus Thursday evening at 8:55, charging him with battery and reckless conduct. Thaddeus, a senior, told police he had stabbed five to ten other classmates with the syringe before it broke. Out of all those who were stuck with the syringe, only one student reported the attack by Friday. A week later, Thaddeus's mother, Jamie Bennett, told My Web Times that her son used a clean insulin injection needle and not a syringe. Apparently, one of Thaddeus's friends is diabetic and gave him and another boy each one of his clean insulin injection needles.

Around 9:45 this morning, two unidentified 16-year-old males approached two Hispanic male students, one 14 and the other 16, in an outdoor hallway between classes. The two unidentified males, and non-students of the school, made gang-related comments. They are affiliated with the Sureo gang while the students are associated with the rival Norteo street gang. The confrontation climaxed when one of the Sureo gang members pulled out a knife and stabbed the two JFK students. The instigators then fled the campus. The injured boys stumbled into the school's main office where school administrators called the police and paramedics. The older boy was transported to Regional Medical Center of San Jose where he was treated for a stomach wound. The younger boy had a superficial stab wound in his arm. Police believe the stabbing to be gang-related and detained four people for questioning.

Three physical fights at Albany High School today results in seven students arrested and one stabbed in the back. This morning Ra'asia Nobles and Areaelis Arroyo, both 17, and two unnamed 15-year-old girls attacked another 15-year-old girl. The five girls have had an ongoing dispute. School officials were able to breakup the fight and called police. The four instigators were charged with third-degree assault. Ra'asia and Areaelis were released on bail while the two unnamed 15-year-old girls were sent to the Albany County Family Court. Shortly after order was restored, another fight broke out. This time 16-year-old Elia Jackson smacked an unnamed 15-year-old girl in the face with a padlock. Our two combatants have had problems with each other before. Once again, order was restored and Elia was charged with second-degree assault. While the police were at the school sorting out the first two fights, the third fight broke out in a hallway. By now it was around 1 p.m. This time it was Jenay Lipscomb taking on Amien Koonce, both 17. The climax to this fight came when Jenay stabbed Amien in the back and then pepper-sprayed him. Police arrested our young female instigator and charged her with second-degree assault, third-degree assault and possessing a noxious material. During her arrest, a 16-year-old male student acted up and police arrested him for disorderly conduct and then released him. Amien was taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition. On Wednesday, February 7, 2007, all charges against Jenay were dropped due to insufficient evidence. Amien's attacker is currently unknown.

Around 11:30 this morning 53-year-old Duane R. Morrison walked into Platte Canyon High School armed with a Glock Model 22 .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol and a Smith & Wesson .357-caliber Magnum revolver. Duane is "something of a loner" and has been living out of his Jeep for the past several days. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and carrying a backpack. Jessica Montgomery, 15, saw him in the hall just after the bell rang for class. He motioned her to come over to him and then she noticed how old he was, with acne and stubble on his face. She told him the bell had rung and she needed to get to class. After all the students were in their respected classrooms, he fired several shots and at 11:40, entered classroom 206 on the second floor, an English college prep class taught by Sandra Smith. Duane fired a warning shot into the ceiling and then ordered the students and Sandra to line up facing the chalkboard. He told the students and Sandra that he was carrying explosives in his backpack. Once they were in a line, he tapped all of the boys and Sandra on the shoulder with one of his guns and told them to leave. One of the boys was 16-year-old Cassidy Grigg. He said he wanted to stay with the girls in the classroom. Duane put the gun right in Cassidy's face and said, "You. Out of here." Cassidy then left the room. Duane tapped six girls on the shoulder and told them to stay. School officials issued a code white, the lockdown code, and called the police. Several agencies responded, including the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the same law enforcement agency that responded to the Columbine massacre. Park County deputies began to negotiate with Duane, although he had the female hostages actually talk to the deputies and relay the conversation to him. During the negotiations, Duane sexually assaulted some of the girls, doing way more than just touching them inappropriately. The negotiator convinced Duane to release four of the girls, one at a time, but he held on to the last two. The four girls told the police of the sexual assaults against them. Duane told the negotiator that "something will happen" at 4 p.m. He then abruptly cut off communication with the negotiator. The Park County Sheriff, Fred Wegener, wanted to protect the last two girls from anymore sexual assaults and was forced into action. The Park County officials secured the inner perimeter of the school and the Jefferson County SWAT team used explosives to enter classroom 206 just after 3:30 p.m. Duane shielded himself with one of the girls and fired upon the SWAT team. The SWAT team was able to pull the other girl out of the room. Duane fired one shot into 16-year-old Emily Keyes's head, his remaining hostage, and then killed himself. Emily, a junior, was flown to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver where she died at 4:32 p.m. The other girl spent the night at a friend's home where she drew on her friend's strength to begin the healing process. Duane's body was still in the classroom when the 6 o'clock hour approached. The school is in a narrow, winding canyon that was carved out by the South Platte River. Bailey is 35 miles southwest of Denver.
Webmaster's note: One of the female hostages was interviewed by the Rocky Mountain News. She told the newspaper of her harrowing experience inside Classroom 206 and allowed the paper to use her name. As school began today at 8 a.m., Eric Hainstock, 15, walked into the school (it houses all grades) with a shotgun and a .22-caliber handgun. Yesterday the ninth-grader had been expelled for having tobacco in the school. Dave Thompson, a janitor at the school, spotted Eric wielding the shotgun as he came across the parking lot. He ran to the front of the school and intended to intercept him. Unfortunately, Eric was able to make it inside the school before Dave and Chuck Keller, a teacher, were able to confront him. Eric put the shotgun in Chuck's face and told him he was going to kill someone. Dave grabbed the gun's barrel, swung Eric around and disarmed him. At least that is what Dave believed initially. Eric began searching his pockets for the handgun. Dave yelled to Chuck to run. Chuck left the scene, entered an office and called 911. Eric broke free of Dave's grasp and moved down the hallway from the entrance where he was confronted by Principal John Klang. He pulled the handgun from his pants and shot his principal three times. Even after being wounded in the head, chest and leg, John ran toward Eric and with the help of other students, tackled our young instigator and held him until the police arrived. School officials began CPR on John, 49. He was rushed to Reedsburg Area Medical Center and then flown to UW Hospital in Madison. John died Friday afternoon. Eric was charged with murder on Saturday. Cazenovia has a population of about 300 and is 60 miles northwest of Madison. With the school teaching all grades under one roof and that our shooter is 15-years-old, I am classifying this as a high school for statistical purposes.

West Nickel Mines Amish (Elementary) School, Village of Nickel Mines, Bart Township, Pennsylvania
Monday, October 2, 2006
The Amish work hard on their farms, doing everything by hand and not relying on modern tools and electricity. One of their one-room schools in the heavily Amish populated Lancaster County of Pennsylvania came under brutal attack by a man they knew. This morning around 3 a.m., 32-year-old Charles Carl Roberts IV finished up his milk delivery route. He came home and slept for a couple of hours before he woke up to help his wife, Marie, get their two sons and only daughter ready for school. At 8:45, he drop them off at their bus stop and hugged them tightly before letting the bus go on its route. He then drove his pickup truck to a local hardware store to buy a few supplies. He had already loaded his truck with a 12-gauge shotgun, a 9mm semiautomatic pistol, a rifle, a stun gun, two knives, two cans of smokeless powder, a pile of wood and a 600 rounds of ammunition. He took all of that, a change of clothes, toilet paper, sexual lubricant, bolts and hardware and rolls of clear tape with him to the Nickel Mines Auction House which is across the street from the one-room West Nickel Mines Amish School. From his truck he watched the Amish children play in the schoolyard. When they were ushered inside by their teacher, he got in his pickup and drove across the street. Charles backed his truck up to the double-doors and walked inside. He was wearing jeans, a T-shirt with a buttoned-down shirt over that. He walked up to the teacher, Emma Mae Zook, carrying a metal tool in his hand. He asked the class if anyone had seen something like this tool along the road. Emma Mae said, "No, but we'll look for it." Charles then walked out of the school, however, the doors were still wide open. He then turned back around, loaded the 9mm and walked back into the school. Beside Emma Mae, her mother and two sisters-in-law were in the classroom. When Emma and her mother saw the gun, they ran out the door to a nearby farm with a phone to call 911. Charles quickly took the rest of schoolroom occupants hostage. He told the 11 girls and 15 boys to lie down at the back of the room. Charles then told the two sisters-in-law they could leave along with their young children. He then released the boys (one nine-year-old girl escaped with her brother), leaving only the female students in the school with him. By now Emma Mae and her mom had made contact with the police, it was around 10:30 a.m., and informed them of the situation. Charles then began unloading the contents of his truck into the classroom. He barricaded the doors with the desks and 2x4s, effectively locking him and ten female students inside. He lined up the girls along the blackboard and bound their feet together with flex ties. The first two police officers arrived at 10:39 and within moments, eight more were on the scene. At 10:50 a.m., Charles called his wife on his cell phone and told her he had molested two young relatives decades ago and was tormented by "dreams of molesting again." He told her where to find the suicide note he had left and hung up. He then called 911 and told the operator that if the police didn't leave in two seconds, he would open fire on the girls. After the call, Marian Fisher, the oldest girl in the room, said to Charles, "Shoot me first." Her younger sister, Barbie, 12, spoke up next saying to shoot her second, thus giving the police more time to save the younger girls. The police traced the call and called Charles back on the cell phone. Charles didn't answer, instead he started shooting the girls, execution style. He fired the shotgun four times and the 9mm 13 times. Two of the young girls died instantly, eight of them were injured. Some of the police officers tried getting through the barricade front door while others broke the front windows and went over the sills. Charles was reloading as the police entered the schoolhouse. He put the 9mm to his forehead and pulled the trigger, killing himself and ending the rampage. The police officers then raced to get the flex ties off of the girl's legs so that first aid could be given. Marian was already dead. An officer cut little Naomi Rose Ebersol free from the other girls and dashed outside to the ambulance. By the time he got there, Naomi had died in his arms. Helicopters took the remaining eight wound girls to Lancaster General Hospital, Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Christiana Hospital in Delaware. A few hours later, one of the girls taken to Lancaster died from her wounds. Earlier the next day, one of the injured girls died at 1 a.m. in Delaware. Another girl, just 7, died three and a half hours later in Hershey. Still injured are a 6-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl in Hershey, and three girls, ages 8 (with neck and arm injuries), 10 (with a head injury) and Barbie with arm an leg injuries, in Children's Hospital in Philadelphia. Marie, Charles's wife, found the suicide notes from Charles, who is not Amish, and gave them to the police. The notes made an attempt to explain his molestation motive. Four of the girls were buried Thursday, October 5, 2006 with Anna Mae Stoltzfus being buried on Friday. The private school teaches Old Order Amish students from the first grade to the eighth grade. The school has almost 30 students, ranging in age from 6 to 13. On Thursday, October 12, 2006 the one-room school building was razed in the early morning hours by a large backhoe. The demolition began at 4:45 a.m. with the porch being removed, then the bell tower was knocked off and finally the walls were toppled. In just 15 minutes, the building was a pile of rubble. By 7:30 the pile of rubble was gone and the site is now an empty field, which the Amish plan to turn into a pasture. Classes resumed in a garage on an Amish farm in the area. Nearly a month and a half later, on Wednesday, November 15, 2006, Dr. D. Holmes Morton, the director of the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, held a news conference with an update on the five wounded girls. He did not mention their names during the news conference. One the young girls is fully disabled from a severe head wound and is unlikely to recover. Her family is treating her at their home. Another young girl, Sarah Ann Stoltzfus, also suffered a severe head wound and was released from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on Friday, December 22, 2006. Sarah Ann's sister is Anna Mae. The remaining three young girls have "face and limb wounds that will be disabling for along time, if not permanently." On Monday, April 2, 2007, six months to the day of the shootings, the students entered their new school, New Hope Amish School. The new building is yards away from the previous one.

School violence gets back to normal (and that is a sad statement there) with a stabbing in Sin City. Two 12-year-old boys were fighting in the cafeteria during lunch today. The fight climaxed when one of the boys stabbed his opponent in the shoulder with a pair of scissors. The injury was minor as the school nurse was able to treat the boy's wounds. The instigator was charged with battery.

Thomas White, 13, donned a mask and a black trench coat around 7:45 this morning. He then walked into the school carrying a Mac-90 rifle, which is a replica of an AK-47 assault rifle. The mask was actually a white t-shirt with two holes cut out for his eyes. Thomas pointed the rifle at Principal Steve Gilbreth, Assistant Superintendent Steve Doerr and two students. The assistant superintendent was visiting the school this morning. He said, "Don't make me do this." Thomas shifted his aim, pointing it at the ceiling, and fired a round. The bullet ripped through a water pipe, but he was determined. He said, "Please, don't make me do this." The Steve's persuaded our troubled young instigator to leave the building. He did so, and police were already outside with their weapons drawn. Thomas dropped the rifle and was arrested. The officers searched his backpack and found a note saying he had left a bomb in the school, along with military manuals, instructions on assembling an improvised explosive device and detailed drawings of the school. The students, about 750 of them, were evacuated to Joplin Memorial Hall and the school was searched. However, no bomb was found. Near the end of January 2007, Thomas was certified to stand trial as an adult on charges of assault, armed criminal action and attempted escape.

At the junior lunch today (1:10 British Standard Time), someone fired an air rifle at the playground of Dunclug College while almost 40 children played. Although none of the 12-year-old students were injured by the barrage of 30 shots, one of the pellets struck a gym door. Police detained and questioned a 13-year-old boy, a 17-year-old male teen and a man in his 40's about this playground shooting. Ruth Wilson, the school's principal, told police that she believes the air rifle was fired from outside the school fence from the direction of the Doury Road estate. By the next morning, all three suspects had been released from custody. Because of the age of the students on the playground, I am classifying this act of school violence as a middle school.

Peng Qirong, a 16-year-old male junior at the school, has been desiring revenge for some time now. Recently, he had asked fellow classmate Cai Fachun to exchange seats with him. She refused and this embarrassed him. He told several of his friends that he extract his revenge on Cai. Unfortunately, the friends didn't believe him and told no one of Peng's delusional state of mind. This morning when the teacher had left for class change, Peng walked into his classroom for the last time. A female student poked at his stomach in a teasing fashion and asked him, "What's under your shirt?" Peng didn't respond. He walked over to Cai and began stabbing her. Another female student was sitting behind Cai and was very scared. She wanted to run away, but Peng grabbed her. She begged Peng to let her go and he finally did. He then turned back to Cai, who could barely breathe at this point. He began stabbing her again, for a total of 24 wounds before his friend (surnamed Xu) yelled at him and stopped him. Cai collapsed to the floor under the barrage of stab wounds to her head, the upper part of her body and one to the back of her neck. Peng dropped his knife and then immediately detonated the bomb he had under his shirt. The blast killed Peng and Cai, but did not injure any other student. Police found Peng's diary and believe the boy to be an introvert who was in love with Cai.

Also this morning around 7:30, (although an hour later due to the different time zones), another act of school violence. Hale County deputies received a call that a school bus driver had been stabbed at the intersection of Farm-to-Market 1424 and Farm-to-Market 1071. The intersection is west of Plainview. When the deputies arrived, they found the injured driver of the school van and arrested 17-year-old Nicolas Joe Don Medina. He was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The news story said that Nicolas attends school in Olton, so that is why I placed this act of school violence in Olton.

School violence spent the night at Edgar Allen Poe's grave and then slinked into Grove Park Elementary School, just a mile and a half from Pimlico Middle School, and attacked again. An 8-year-old third-grader brought a loaded .22-caliber revolver with him to school today and he put it in his desk. Around 10 a.m. another 8-year-old boy came over to look at the gun. The second boy accidentally pulled the trigger to the gun. Surprisingly, the bullet did not penetrate the desk so no students were injured. School officials took possession of the gun and turned the boys over to the police. The young boy who shot the handgun was released to his parent. The young boy who brought the gun to school was charged with possessing a handgun. The school day was not shortened at all and continued as normal as possible.

Zakir Hussain has been driving a school bus for the past 18 months. This morning, as usual, he picked up his last student, a 14-year-old male South African student. Zakir was about to take a U-turn at the subway and he checked his rearview mirror. He was shocked to see the South African student and a male Emirati student fighting. Some of the other students began screaming and before Zakir could reach the two boys, the unnamed South African student had stabbed the Emirati student with a Swiss army knife. The boy was bleeding profusely and Zakir used two shirts to stem the blood flow. This was the first violent act he had seen between the two boys and he had previously thought the two were friends. The school's principal, David Morrison, permanently expelled our young instigator from Westminster.

School violence continues to romp outside the United States with this act of school violence in the land of the Kiwi's. This evening, an Auckland area church sponsored a hip-hop competition in Avondale's auditorium. A security guard spotted 14-year-old Manaola Kaumeafaiva on the grounds and asked him to go outside the school's gates to have a cigarette and sober up. Just after arriving at the gate, Manaola was fatally stabbed by an unnamed 16-year-old male. Another 16-year-old was stabbed as well, however his wounds were not life-threatening. The security guard ran up to Manaola and asked if he was alright, but he just looked at him and collapsed. The security guard tried to apply first aid, but the wound was too deep and Manaola died in his arms. At about this same time, the participants and those who attended began to file out of the school. Some of them witnessed the stabbing and began chasing our young instigator, but he got away from them. Paramedics did arrive and took Manaola's body and the wounded 16-year-old boy to Auckland City Hospital. Police did apprehend our young instigator on a nearby street and describe this event as "a random act of fatal violence." Our young instigator was first charged with assault with a weapon, however, those charges were upgraded to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on Tuesday, October 24, 2006.

Sometime late Saturday night, Qwynton Armstead arrived at his sister's four bedroom apartment on the campus of Penn State University. Qwynton, 24 and from Philadelphia, did not attend classes at Penn State. Her neighbors noticed Qwynton holding a handgun and called police just before 1 a.m. Sunday morning. The university police were the first to respond and they were able to pull his sister out of the apartment before Qwynton barricaded himself in one of the bedrooms. The police evacuated five nearby buildings and called in the state police. The state police began to negotiate with Qwynton and talked with him for over 8 hours. They even made their way into the apartment's kitchen and talked to him from there. Just before 9 a.m., the negotiations broke down and the police believed that Qwynton would harm himself. The decision was made to try and enter the bedroom and get the gun away from him. The officers tossed in tear gas and percussion grenades, but Qwynton did not emerge from the room. Another volley of tear gas was fired and then the officers entered the room. They found Qwynton, still holding the handgun with a bullet hole in his head and blood flowing freely from it. Qwynton's death was ruled a suicide.

Another act of school violence in South Africa has the education ministers at a loss of what to do. This morning around 8:30, Principal Fana Nkabinde was in his office when he noticed a student running past his window carrying an axe. He quickly left his office to see what was happening. When he got outside, he saw the student with the axe, and another student with a sickle, hacking away at defenseless student. Fana and another teacher grabbed the instigators and disarmed them. They then transported the injured student to a nearby clinic in a bakkie. Several teachers began to question the instigators, but their interrogation was interrupted when another student came in and told them a second student was lying injured on the school grounds. The teachers rushed to the second injured student and found that his hands had been chopped and that he was bleeding profusely. The injured student was taken to Rob Ferreira Hospital where he underwent surgery. The instigators were arrested. All of the students range in age from 17 to 19 and are in grades eight and nine. For statistical purposes, I am going to say the instigators are 18-years-old.

The young boy asked his older brother, 29-year-old Motheti Madityana, to meet him after school today. As the boy was walking toward his brother, five other students shoved him to the ground and began hitting and kicking him. Motheti rushed in to help his brother, however, he was stabbed in the chest and back by a Grade 9 male student. He was taken to Pretoria Academic Hospital where he was treated. Police began interviewing witnesses so that they could search down the Grade 9 student.

Silcoates is a top private school that teaches students all the way to age 18. Today, Christopher Keith Willby, 25 took a kitchen knife from his ex-wife's home (her name is Tracey) and told her, "I need to sort myself out because I can't carry on like this or I'm going to kill someone." He went over to his best friend's house, Gavin Corden, who is 22. The pair walked to a Londis store and bought 16 cans of Carlsberg larger. The two men then went on a "drinking spree." They drank nine bottles in a churchyard before moving their revelry to the grounds of the Silcoates School. The duo left the school and returned to Gavin's home where they drank five more bottles of the larger. The night of enjoyment turned violent as Christopher stabbed Gavin in the neck with the knife he had taken from Tracey's home. The two men returned to the school where Christopher tied Gavin's hands behind his back, pulled out the knife and stabbed him seven more times in the neck. He then tore off part of Gavin's t-shirt and strangled Gavin to death. When Gavin was dead, Christopher kicked his body in the head until the skull fractured. He then went to Donna Young's home on Silcoates Street and told her he and Gavin had been attacked by a group of masked men. Donna is Christopher's ex-girlfriend. Christopher pleaded guilty to murder charges. On Friday, March 30, 2007, Leeds Crown Court Judge James Stewart QC sentenced Christopher to life in prison with a minimum 20 year term. For statistical purposes, I am labeling this school as unknown since neither of the two men attended classes there.

School violence continues to pop up in South Africa with two boys fighting. Luthando Wanceya and his unnamed opponent fought earlier today. The fight was witnessed by the school's caretaker, Enton Jeremiah. The fight ended peacefully, however, later in the day, Luthando's opponent sprinkled water on his clothes. The fight began anew and Luthando tried to fight back. His opponent kicked him to the ground and then fled the school. For an undisclosed reason, Luthando took his opponent's school books home with him. His opponent went to Luthando's home to get his books back. The two boys argued again, but Luthando's aunt was able to keep the fight from restarting. His opponent went home and later Luthando's aunt sent him to a nearby veld to fetch goats. His opponent was waiting in the veld and stabbed Luthando in the chest. He ran back to his home, screaming for help. His parents and aunt rushed him to Grey Hospital where he died upon arrival. Even though the final attack didn't happen on school grounds, I'm still counting the death of Luthando Wanceya as an act of school violence.

With this being Halloween, school officials decided to post security officers at their schools to prevent vandalism. Russell B. Kocur, 39, is a second-year school security officer and he took up his post at Halls High School with pride. Just before 10:30 p.m., Russell was making his rounds and came to the school gym. There he noticed a 1975 Buick with Virginia license plates. He called dispatch and told them he was going to investigate the driver, who appeared to be intoxicated at the time. The intoxicated man is Carroll O'Neill Lineberry, a 39-year-old male from Galax, Virginia. For an undisclosed reason, Carroll pulled out a gun and shot Russell and took off in his police cruiser, a 2003 Chevy Impala with a police benevolent tag. Russell called back to dispatch saying he had been shot. Paramedics where dispatched to the school and found Russell on the ground with a gunshot wound to his back. Sadly, Russell died on his way to UT Medical Center. A Knoxville police officer noticed the tagged Impala and stopped the vehicle on I-275 near the Oldham Road exit. Officers fought with Carroll and had to Taser him before they could apprehend him. The next day Carroll was charged with first degree murder and police released more of the details in the case. Sometime between Sunday and Tuesday Carroll broke into Neal Hutton's home in Galax, Virginia. He then stabbed the 75-year-old man to death and used a blunt device to bash in his head. Carroll then stole Neal's car and drove 175 miles west toward Knoxville. As he reached the town, the car had a flat so he stopped at the school to change the tire. Police suspect that Carroll believed he was caught when Russell approached him and that is why he shot him. Galax police plan to charge Carroll with capital murder, robbery and grand larceny.

For the third Tuesday in a row, school violence has struck South Africa. This morning while the teacher was not in the room, two Grade Eight boys were playing "maraba-raba" (a game of some sort). During the game, 16-year-old Jack Fischer Mokoena began laughing. One of the other boys in the classroom, aged 18 years, asked him why he was laughing. Before Jack could respond, the 18-year-old stabbed Jack under his left arm. Jack rushed to his teacher and also told the school principal before he was taken to the hospital for treatment. After attacking a teacher with a pair of scissors earlier this school year, a 10-year-old boy becomes a repeat offender today by attacking a fellow student with another pair of scissors. What's even more bizarre is that after a 20 day suspension, our young instigator was allowed to return to school. Concerned parents with children at the school believe the boy will become vicious again.

This morning at 9:30, 18-year-old Sebastian Bosse, a former student of Geschwister Scholl High School, parked nearby his former school and donned a masked. As soon as he entered the grounds, he drew out a pistol. Sebastian opened fire and wounded several students and teachers with his opening barrage. Students scattered for safety as he approached the school. A female teacher, the head caretaker and three students, ranging in age from 12 to 15, sustained the most injuries. Several students and most of the responding police officers suffered from smoke inhalation. This increased the number of wounded to a total of 27. The police were called and arrived within six minutes. The arrival of the police prompted our young shooter to set off smoke bombs and move up to the second floor. Officers began searching the school room by room, evacuating terrified students as they found them. In a smoke filled room on the second floor, they found Sebastian had committed suicide. Around his body was a large caliber muzzle-loading flintlock pistol, a muzzle-loading flintlock rifle with a sawed-off stock and barrel, a single shot bolt-action .22-caliber rifle that also had its stock and barrel sawed-off and several homemade pipe bombs. Strapped to one of his legs was a knife. An investigation began and police discovered Sebastian had left behind several messages on a website that told of his plans.
