To report a threat of school violence before the instigator has a chance to act on his/her intentions, please contact Speak Up at 1-866-SPEAKUP (that is 1-866-773-2587)

I would like to thank all of the Survivors and others who have contacted me with information about school violence.  I really do appreciate the help, for without their help, several of these occurrences would not be here.

One other thing I would like to ask of those who read over this list of tragedies is this: If you can provide me with any more details of any of these incidents, I would greatly appreciate the information. Or, if you know of another violent act at a school that is not on this list, please forward that information to me as well.  The link to my e-mail is above.

Classes were about to resume after lunch today when a student went on a drug-induced stabbing spree.  He chased the security guard from the scene and stabbed two teachers with a pocket knife.  One of the teachers, from East New Britain, was stabbed on the head and the other teacher, from Morobean, was stabbed in the abdomen.  Both of them were male and died around 3:00 from their wounds.  A female auxiliary staff member was stabbed on her breast.  She was in critical condition at Tusa Private Hospital when this news report was published.  The instigator is from Manus and is a TAFE student.  He was apprehended by the police.  This act of school violence began around 1 p.m.

Springbrook High School, Silver Spring, Maryland

Friday, August 5, 2005

An argument this morning led to a stabbing this afternoon in Maryland.  A group of male and female students confronted David Gamero and Juan Quito Jr., one 17 and one 16, as they left their summer school classes.  The group missed the student they were looking for and decided to attack his friends when they saw them.  Around 1:10 a fight ensued at the school's parking lot with Alfredo Sanchez, 28, pulling out a knife.  David was "eviscerated" with wounds in the head, lower back and abdomen.  Juan was stabbed multiple times in the back.  They attempted to run back to the school, but collapsed on the ground.  Police and paramedics were called to the scene and the injured students were flown to the hospital for treatment.  Four hours later and seven miles away at a Target store, four more teens were stabbed in another fight.  On Saturday, police arrested five people in connection with the school stabbing.  Those arrested are: Jose Cornejo, 25, Luis Guzman ,19, Kevin Macklin Mendoza, 18, Harris Hauffen, 17 and Rolando Velasquez, 16.  All of them were charged as adults with attempted murder, first and second degree assault and conspiracy.  Henry Caballero, 20 was charged with four counts of attempted murder and first degree assault in the store stabbing.  The injured and the instigators are members of rival Salvadorian gangs.  However, there is no connection between the two stabbings. Since there is no connection between the two stabbings, I am not counting the store stabbing injured in my stats.  On Thursday, August 18, 2005, a grand jury indicted Kevin, Rolando, Harris and Alfredo with one count each of attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, first-degree assault and conspiracy to commit firs-degree assault.  Jorge Arbaiza, 15, was indicted on four counts of attempted first-degree murder at the Target store.  The remaining suspects will have their preliminary hearings in September.  Kevin was sentenced by Judge John W. Debilius III on May 12, 2006 to 18 months in prison.  Luis was sentenced May 15, 2006 by Judge Katherine D. Savage to 88 days served in jail.  Harris was sentenced to 4 1/2 years by Circuit Court Judge Nelson W. Rupp Jr. on Wednesday, May 24, 2006.  Charges against Alfredo because he was indicted on federal racketeering charges.

Mandarin Middle School, Jacksonville, Florida

Monday, August 8, 2005

As their bus started to leave Mandarin Middle School for home, two 15-year-old boys attacked one of their classmates in the back of the bus.  The boy being attacked tried to avoid the fight by fleeing the emergency rear exit, but the instigators followed and continued to pummel him.  The fight was eventually broken up by school security officers and a police officer.  One of the instigators caused more problems for himself by slightly injuring the officer that was trying to restrain him.  Both of the instigators were charged with battery and one was also charged with assault on a law enforcement officer.  The boy being attacked sustained bruises to his head, mouth and around his right eye.

Last night 14-year-old Roshounda Cooper wrote herself a note on the front page of her black spiral notebook.  The note said, "Remember to bring knife."  You see, Roshounda and her boyfriend, 15-year-old Jamar Hinds, were breaking up.  As they talked on the phone Wednesday night, she said to him that she would kill him at school with a knife.  This morning, Roshounda put the notebook inside a three-ring binder, a knife into the waistband of her pants and went to school.  As she got off the bus at the school, and before security could check her for weapons, the estranged girlfriend pulled out the 8-inch knife and began to charge Jamar.  A school employee saw her wielding the knife, shouted for help and tried to block her path.  Cpl. Edd Gordon, who was nearby, grabbed her right arm, where the knife was, but she quickly switched it to her left hand.  Cpl. Gordon told her to drop the knife and Roshounda lunged at him.  He was able to push her away and then drew his service pistol, a .45-caliber Glock semiautomatic.  He aimed it at her as she advanced on him.  "Don't point that gun at me," she cried.  Cpl. Gordon pushed her away again.  Roshounda was about 4 feet away from Cpl. Gordon and poised for a strike when Deputy Mary McFarland fired her Taser on the young girl.  Deputy McFarland was also patrolling the school and arrived just in time.  Roshounda dropped the knife and fell onto her stomach.  Deputy McFarland hit her on her breast and side with the prongs of the Taser.  Roshounda began to kick as other deputies tried to subdue her... so, Deputy McFarland zapped her again.  Roshounda was taken into custody on the following charges: aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and possession of a weapon on school grounds.  During the whole ordeal, Jamar wasn't injured.  Roshounda was transported to Florida Hospital in Orlando to have the Taser prongs removed from her breast.  Cpl. Gordon had not gone through Taser training and therefore did not have a Taser on him.  His superiors backed up his actions to draw his service pistol on Roshounda.  Gateway School is for emotionally challenged students.

Preschool activities can be just as violent as a day at school.  Remember Huffman High School from last year (8-3-04)?  Well, this time the violence strikes the football team instead of the band.  A 17-year-old boy, who wanted to become his school's kicker, was at practice this afternoon.  Also at the practice, but not trying out for the team, was a 14-year-old boy.  The two boys have a known bad history with each other and it climaxed into a fight during one of the breaks.  During the fight, the younger boy, a freshman, stabbed the older boy, a senior, on his left side with a 3-inch knife.  The older boy suffered a collapsed lung and was air lifted to Stanford Medical Center.  The young instigator fled the scene, but was picked up by police a few blocks away.  He was taken to the juvenile hall and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and possessing a weapon on school grounds.  Classes begin at Santa Cruz High on Wednesday, August 31, 2005.

A High School in Tampa, Florida

Friday, August 19, 2005

A 39-year-old mother tried all week to register her 16-year-old son at a high school in Tampa when things turned violent today.  The boy has been suspended from school since last year.  School officials advised the mother to register her son at the high school closer to their home.  When the boy heard this, he "body checked" a school police officer, nearly knocking him to the ground.  The officer regained his balance and was in the process of arresting the boy when he was attacked by the mother. This attack freed up the boy to join his mother in assaulting the school police officer.  The boy's 22-year-old older brother was about to join in on the family assault when a security officer stopped him.  The police officer then drew his Taser and the attack ended.  All three, the mother and her two sons, were arrested.  The mother and younger son were charged with assaulting a school police officer at a high school.

Roosevelt High School, Dallas, Texas

Friday, August 19, 2005

Earlier this summer the state education agency closed the Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District because the school buildings were so dilapidated, they posed a threat to the students and teachers.  Also, the school district was out of money and the community had lost its confidence in the school board.  The Dallas Independent School District agreed to bring the Wilmer-Hutchins students into the Dallas schools.  The students from Wilmer-Hutchins were split up between the Dallas schools and that was apparently a problem for some of them today.  Two girls, one from Wilmer-Hutchins and one from Dallas, started a brawl in Roosevelt's cafeteria today.  It escalated when other students joined in and started throwing food.  School officials were able to restore order in the cafeteria and charged five students with disruption, a Class C misdemeanor.  Minutes later, another fight broke out.  School officials once again restored ordered and issued four more citations.  In all 13 students were sent home for participating in the two fights.

After tonight's football game between Northwestern and Booker T. Washington high schools, gunfire rang out in the parking lot of Traz-Powell Stadium.  17-year-old James Lewis, a senior at Northwestern, was with a group of males when the shooting started.  They all scattered and he fell to the ground.  James died from his gunshot wounds.  Northwestern had won the football game.  By Wednesday, Jerod Antwon Rennie, 19, was in police custody and confessed to killing James.  Jerod told police he and James had been involved in an altercation earlier in the day.  Tonight, when the two met up, Jerod said James made a sudden move and he fired his gun in self-defense.

School violence strikes on the first day of school at El Cerrito High.  About 1 this afternoon, a 15-year-old boy walked out of a classroom and felt something hard hit his head.  He, and school officials, didn't know what hit him, however he was visibly bleeding.  He went to Children's Hospital Oakland where doctors removed a plastic pellet round.  The doctors left another plastic pellet round in his skull.  The boy returned to school on Wednesday and told school officials that he had been shot.  An investigation began at that point.  On Thursday, police arrested a 17-year-old male student at the school in connection with this shooting.  He was charged with suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a weapon on school grounds.

Maury Middle School, Dandridge, Tennessee

Thursday, August 25, 2005

Earlier this week, a teacher disciplined three of her male students.  Two of the boys are 12-years-old and the other is 14.  The boys got together and decided that they would kill the teacher.  One of the boys got two of his uncle's guns, one from his truck and the other from a junk drawer.  As classes changed this morning around 9:30 this morning, the three boys entered a restroom to distribute the guns and begin their plan.  Minutes later, a gunshot resonated through the halls of Maury Middle School.  One of the teachers heard the gunfire from the restroom and went to investigate.  Inside the restroom were the three boys and the two handguns, one of them was still loaded.  The bullet hit one of the seventh-graders in the lower leg.  His mother picked him up and transported him to Saint Mary's Hospital.  The other two boys were arraigned at the Jefferson County Juvenile Facility and charged with possessing a weapon on school grounds.  As police investigated, they upgraded the charges to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.  The three boys were arraigned as juveniles in court on Tuesday where their bond was set at $100,000 each.  The wounded boy was allowed to go home, but only until a doctor could remove the bullet from his leg.  All of this could have been avoided as the teacher was not at Maury Middle School today.

Omega Psi Phi fraternity members were sitting near two benches painted purple and gold, the fraternity's colors.  Ryan Mack, 32, approached them and did or said something that offended the members.  (The news story didn't say what provoked them.)  This was around 1:00 in the afternoon on the first day of classes at JSU.  Ryan then went to the Jacob L. Reddix union where some of the fraternity members followed him.  At the union a fight broke out and then climaxed when Ryan pulled out a 9mm handgun and shot Benjamin Hart in the upper abdomen.  Benjamin, 23, was treated at University of Mississippi Medical Center and released on September 3.  Police arrested Ryan and charged him with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon on school property.

About 2:30 this afternoon, 21-year-old Jeremy Ryan Reed was driving his black Infiniti G20 sedan at a high rate of speed through the student parking lot.  He left the school grounds, driving south in the 5600 block of West before making a quick U-turn.  (Now driving north on West.)  He jumped the median and almost got hit by a semi-truck as he made the U-turn.  Jeremy headed back to the school and saw a group of teens standing on the east side of West near the 4500 block of South.  As he approached them, he jerked the car to the right and struck a 15-year-old boy on his bicycle.  The boy was thrown nearly 100 feet to the northeast.  His bike landed over 30 feet to the east side of the road.  Jeremy then sped away, his windshield smashed.  About a mile away in a residential area, he failed to negotiate a turn and crashed through a fence.  With his car now damaged beyond functionality, he began to run east through the neighborhood.  Melissa Person heard the crash as she was pulling into her driveway.  She pulled back out onto the road, drove past three house and saw Jeremy's smashed Infiniti.  He was running up the street, but as he approached Melissa's house, he slowed to a brisk walk.  Melissa followed Jeremy for about a block and then asked him if the smashed black Infiniti was his.  He said, "Yeah, can you take me back to it?"  Melissa had her two kids in the back of her car and didn't want to pick up a stranger.  She returned to the wrecked Infiniti where she learned that Jeremy was wanted in the hit and run.  Police arrived and setup a perimeter around the neighborhood.  They found Jeremy intoxicated in a window well a short time later.  He was taken to the Salt Lake County Jail and put into a cell to sober up so that he could be booked on automobile homicide.  The 15-year-old boy died from his injury.

Following a school break around 11 a.m., 15-year-old William Kerr began heading back to his classroom.  An unnamed male classmate nudged William and blocked his path while another unnamed male classmate stabbed him with a pen.  David Graham, 16, witnessed the attack and tried to help William by putting him into a headlock.  (Although why one would put another in a headlock to stop them from being stabbed is beyond me.)  William then pulled out his pocketknife.  When David saw this, he released William and ran to the vending machines in the cafeteria.  William chased him, all the while wielding the pocketknife.  William cornered David and stabbed him in the chest, three times in the buttocks and sliced his hand.  Teachers and school officials were able to end the violence.  Police arrived and had David transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary to be treated for his injuries.  William was arrested and was due in court on Wednesday.  He pleaded guilty in court on Friday, August 25, 2006.

The Houston Astrodome became home to thousands of New Orleans evacuees when Hurricane Katrina flooded the Big Easy on August 29, 2005..  Houston opened up their schools to the Louisiana students and a riot broke out today.  For days animosity brewed between the two groups as to who controlled the school.  The fight began at 8 a.m. with about 25 students (some from Houston, some from Louisiana) when a Houston student tossed a soft drink can into a group of Louisiana students.  Fists soon followed and the brawl became a riot.  Police eventually regained control of the students and had three injured students transported to a hospital.  Five other students were arrested and charged with disruption of school activities.

A few weeks ago, Kelly Grimes, 21, and an unnamed girl, 15, became involved in a spitting incident when the younger girl spit on Kelly.   This was at a football game between Sherwood High School and another school.  Kelly's boyfriend plays for Sherwood.  Tonight, Kelly invited her half sister, 15-year-old Kanisha Neal, to go with her to the football game between Blake and Sherwood high schools.  Blake lost the game 44-0.  At the end of the game, around 8:30, Kelly, Kanisha and a third unnamed girl were walking in the parking lot when Kanisha asked them to point out the girl who had spit on Kelly two weeks ago.  Kelly and the unnamed friend declined Kanisha's request.  However, the unnamed 15-year-old girl and four of her friends came across them in the crowd near a green SUV.  A racial epithet was said, a punch was thrown and one of the girls from the quintet started swinging a baseball bat at Kelly and Kanisha.  She tried to flee, but the unnamed girl with Kelly and Kanisha cut her off.  She turned back and went right into the arms of Kanisha.  Kanisha grabbed the girl's hair and began pulling it and punching her.  The unnamed 15-year-old girl then pulled out a knife and stabbed Kanisha just below her left breast.  The cut was very clean with little outward bleeding, but massive internal bleeding.  Kanisha, who attends Rockville High School, collapsed into Kelly's arms.  Kelly and the unnamed third girl placed Kanisha on the ground where she shook uncontrollably.  Police officers and school officials came to her aid and to break up the fight.  They began CPR on her and then had her transported to Suburban Hospital where she died.  Police arrested the unnamed 15-year-old female student from Sherwood High School and charged her as a juvenile with second-degree murder. On Thursday, December 22, 2005, Judge Terrence McGann found the unnamed 15-year-old instigator guilty on murder charges, guilty of carrying a deadly weapon on school property and concealing a deadly weapon.

Central High School, Muncie, Indiana

Monday, September 26, 2005

This is Homecoming Week at Central High School, and school violence starts it off on the wrong foot.  This morning during first period, Travis Marlett, an autistic 17-year-old, feigned a stomach ache to acquire a pass to go to the nurse's office.  However, he bypassed the nurse's office, went upstairs and entered a classroom to get a tissue.  Student aide Leigh Ann Vorhees was the only other person in the room.  It was 8:30 at the time.  Travis left the room, came right back in, walked up behind her, put his hand over her mouth and slit the 16-year-old's throat with a 5-inch carving knife.  Leigh Ann screamed as best she could with a slit throat and a teacher ran in to see what the commotion was.  Leigh Ann was trying to fight off Travis when the teacher arrived.  She was able to get the knife out of his hands.  The teacher was able to pull him away from her and subdue him until the police arrived.  Leigh Ann was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital where doctors stitched up a 3-inch gaping wound in her neck and treated the cuts on her hands.  She was released from the hospital in the afternoon.  Police took Travis into custody and charged him with attempted murder.  The police obtained permission from Travis's mother to search his room, there they found about 50 knives.  Both Travis and Leigh Ann, who plays volleyball and her mother is a county judge, are juniors at Muncie Central High School.  In early December 2006, Travis pleaded guilty but mentally ill to criminal confinement and was sentenced to 20 years in prison with mental health treatment by Special Judge Peter Haviza of Randolph County.  Prosecutors dropped the more serious charges of attempted murder and batter with a deadly weapon when Travis pleaded guilty.

Joshua S. Minks, 17, took apart a 12-guage shotgun, put the three pieces into a duffel bag (along with black clothes and a mask) and smuggled them into his school this morning.  He entered a restroom, donned the black clothes and mask, withdrew the shotgun pieces from the duffel bag and reassembled the gun.  He loaded it and another student walked into the restroom at this time.  The student said, "That gun's not real."  Joshua then fired a single shot into the ceiling to prove that it was a real gun.  A school administrator heard the gunfire, entered the restroom and saw Joshua with the gun.  The administrator talked to Joshua and calmed him down while other school officials evacuated the students to the nearby Centene Center.  The police arrived, took Joshua, a special needs student, into custody and charged him with four counts of assault on school property as well as unlawful use of a weapon.  No one was injured in this shooting that took place just after 8 a.m.  On Tuesday, July 25, 2006, Joshua pleaded guilty to one count of assault on school property and unlawful uses of a weapon.  Prosecutors dropped the three other assault accounts.

A black 13-year-old male student wanted to create a racial incident at his school today.  Earlier in the week, the boy had asked several classmates to bring a knife to school and stab him in the buttocks.  After several refusals, a tall blond-haired kid, also 13, agreed.  The two boys met up before first period in one of the school's restrooms.  The blond-haired boy stabbed the black boy in the buttocks as agreed upon.  The injured boy (he's also the instigator) then reported the stabbing.  He was treated by the school's nurse. The school was locked down at 7:45 a.m. and the police were called.  As police investigated the stabbing, they discovered the black boy had also employed two look outs for his stabbing. Back in the states, school violence rolls on.  A 13-year-old male student stabbed a 14-year-old classmate in the forehead with a pencil.  He also touched two other male students, one 13 and the other 14, "in a sexual manner."  The injured student was not taken to the hospital.  The young instigator was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.  Also today in Columbus, at Eddy Middle School, a 14-year-old boy was showing a handgun to his friends when he pointed it at a female classmate.  He did not pull the trigger.  The 14-year-old was arrested at his home and charged with possession of a weapon on school property, trespassing and pointing a pistol at another person.  He is being held at the Regional Youth Detention Center.  I am not counting the Eddy Middle School event as an act of school violence.  It's here to let you know how often things like this can happen.

Thursday, October 20, 2005

A couple of weeks ago, two 15-year-old boys were released from the same juvenile detention center.  They enrolled at Saginaw High School to continue their education.  Today, one of them ensured his return to the detention center when he took a noontime dare.  In a crowded hallway, a group of ten boys were 15 feet away from a 17-year-old girl.  She overheard one of them, Clarence W. Russell III, bragging that he had a gun.  The other boys dared him to shoot 15-year-old Daniel Foster, offering him $20 to $40 for the violent act.  I guess it doesn't take much to entice a 15-year-old boy to shoot somebody else as Clarence pulled a .380-caliber handgun from his Carhartt-style coat and fired three times at Daniel, striking him in the chest.  Daniel yelled, "All, I got shot!"  He ran a few paces, fell sideways to the floor and began kicking his legs.  He was rushed to Covenant Medical Center and listed in critical condition after a two hour surgery.   Clarence ran from the school, but was caught by a security officer in a yard nearby a few minutes later.  Police arrested him and recovered the gun.  Police believe the shooting to be gang related. Clarence was arraigned on Friday afternoon and charged with assault with intent to murder and five felony firearms charges.

The school day ends at 2:30 p.m. for the students at Birney Elementary.  About 200 of them were still at the school for after-school activities at 3:01 p.m. when 37-year-old Keith Breazell, a "validated gang member" entered the staff parking lot.  Keith was at the school to pickup his 5-year-old son. A black man between 18 and 30-years-old (gee, that really narrows the search now doesn't) approached Keith.  The two men spoke briefly before Keith was shot twice in his upper torso by the other man.  He was rushed to University Medical Center where he died.  The shooter left the scene in a white compact car.  Police say his murderer, also a gang member, had reason to believe he would be there at three o'clock this afternoon.

English teacher Mark Seghers relocated to Philadelphia after Hurricane Katrina tore through his Long Beach, Mississippi home.  He started working at SPHS and found out how little brotherly love is in this city.  Last Wednesday, a female student yelled an obscenity into his classroom and threatened him.  When he asked for her name, she ran away.  Today, he heard the same girl making a ruckus in the hallway.  He again asked for the 17-year-old's name.  She refused and he tried to take her into his room.  She pulled away and started throwing punches at him.  Her twin sister and 20 other students joined in the pummeling of Mark.  When it was all over with, Mark had a black eye, facial bruises and a chipped tooth.  Police arrested the twins and charged them with aggravated assault, making terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.  Mark said he would not return to South Philadelphia High and hoped to be transferred to a safer school.  By the beginning of the next school year, only two students had been charged and convicted for attack Mark.  So far, police are not in any hurry to bring charges against the other 20 students.

On Friday, October 28, the school's headmaster and deputy got drunk on alcohol.  They harassed the public during their drunken stupor.  Citizens complained and police went to the school, but the headmaster resisted arrest.  The police returned on Saturday but found their way blocked by students.  Today, the police returned to the school to arrest him and were confronted by more students, this time they were armed with rocks.  Somehow or another, the officers were locked in the school, surrounded by students throwing rocks at them.  Believing themselves to be in danger, the officers opened fire on the students.  One died there at the school, two more died at the hospital and up to 35 were injured.  That's the official story.  However, the school board says something different.  They say drunken police officers took 900 kina ($NZ440) from a teacher's group holding the the student-donated money for an end-of-the-year party.  The headmaster was demanding the money be returned.  Police officers went to the school, dragged him from his office and manhandled his deputy.  Some of the students threw rocks at the police, but not the large crowd of students police say were throwing rocks.  The police then opened fire on the students, who range in age from 7 to 16.  Provincial Police Commander Teddy Tei promised a full investigation into the matter.  Papua New Guinea police are known for their ill-discipline and brutality.  The next day, the police commander at Porgera was removed from duty as the investigation got under way.  On Wednesday, December 14, 2005, Inspector Felix Nebanet and First Constable Paul Pare were charged with willful murder and attempted murder for their roles in this school shooting.  Felix was the Mobile Squad 12 commander in Laiagam.  Paul worked out of the Porgera Police Station.

Richard Ishmael Secondary School, Georgetown, Demerara, Guyana

Wednesday, November 30, 2005

On Tuesday two girls got into a squabble at Richard Ishmael Secondary School.  One of the girls is 15-years-old and the other is Tomieka Smith, age unknown.  The exchange of words was over the 15-year-old girl and a male student.  The squabble escalated to a fight, with the unnamed girl slamming Tomieka's head into a desk.  The two girls were eventually separated and sent to the head teacher's office.  Once there, neither of the girls were able to present their case to the head teacher about what caused the fight.  The head teacher gave them letters to give to their parents and suspended the unnamed 15-year-old girl.  Tomieka was sent to the hospital for treatment.  While there, her mother Joy arrived to see how her oldest twin was doing.  After seeing the bruises on her daughter's face, Joy took Tomieka back to the school to talk to the head teacher.  However, they were referred to the Deputy Head. The Deputy Head Teacher and Tomieka's class teacher spoke with them, with her teacher asking that the letter be destroyed.  She also wanted Tomieka to be in class tomorrow for an examination.  Joy and Tomieka then left the school.  Today, Tomieka's eyes and face were swollen so badly that Joy called the head teacher to tell her she was going to call the police.  The head teacher asked her not to do that and said that she would look into the matter and that there wasn't a need to get the police involved just yet.  Joy didn't contact the police and scheduled to meet with the unnamed 15-year-old's parents on Friday.  Later in the day, Joy's other daughter, and Tomieka's twin, Tunicia, called and said she was being bullied at school by a female friend of the unnamed 15-year-old.  Another family member went to the school to speak with the teachers about what was happening.  When the teacher's had called for the friend of the unnamed 15-year-old girl, she refused to go to the office.  Tunicia called once more to tell her mother of the bullying.  This time Joy and six of her relatives went to the school. The family members who went to the school include 34-year-old Jacklyn Levius and 15-year-old Wanda Small.  Joy asked to speak to the head teacher and the friend of the unnamed 15-year-old girl, but once again, the girl refused to come to the office and explain herself.  Joy's relatives took matters into their own hands when  Jacklyn and Wanda left the head teacher's office in search of the bully.  Wanda, who knows the bully, had the idea to go find the girl who had beaten up her relative.  As they searched the school, they came across the the female friend of 15-year-old instigator and heated words were exchanged.  Suddenly, the young female instigator grabbed Jacklyn, pulled out a knife and began stabbing her.  Jacklyn was stabbed four times, all in her chest near her heart.  Wanda joined in the fight in an effort to save Jacklyn.  Wanda was stabbed just above the right eye and slashed on her left hand.  After wounding her opponents, the instigator fled the school.  Jacklyn was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital and died just after 8 p.m.  Wanda was also taken to the hospital and treated for her wounds.  The young instigator turned herself in on Saturday.

Antoanela I., 17, left her home months ago to live with her boyfriend, 32-year-old Constantin Groza.  He lives on the same street as she does.  During a night of intimacy, nude pictures of her were taken.  Earlier this week an e-mail with those pictures was sent to the school.  Antoanela became angry and decided to dump her much older boyfriend.  Constantin was upset about this and went to her school to find out why she wanted out of the relationship.  Even though the school has body guards at the door and he looks nothing like a teenager who is supposed to be there, Constantin gained entry to the campus.  The couple started arguing over the break up when the deputy director of the school invited them to use her office to resolve the argument.  Minutes later, she heard Antoanela screaming.  When the deputy director opened the door, she saw that Antoanela had been stabbed with a knife.  She was transported to the emergency hospital in Bucharest and underwent surgery.  Constantin was captured while he was talking to a journalist.  He was telling them Antoanela had asked him to cut her with his pocketknife more than once. He also said he to the school to give her money.  Police charged him with attempted murder.  Antoanela is continuing to recover from her injuries.

Horizon Continuation (High) School, Anaheim, California

Monday, December 5, 2005

At 11:30 this morning, a 17-year-old male student was standing outside the school when a black Ford Taurus rolled up along side of him.  The passengers in the Taurus shouted gang slang at him and then opened fire on him.  He was struck in the back by one of the flying bullets.  The vehicle fled the scene, but was recovered just one and a half miles away.  The injured student was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange.  Police believe this shooting to be gang related.  Orange County Department of Education runs the school, which is a white building at the end of a strip mall.

Webmaster's note: The first news story didn't name the school, just the address (1895 W. Katella Avenue).  However, the Anaheim school district website has no such school listed at this address.  The second news story named the school as South West Anaheim, but once again a Google search for that school came up empty.  The third news story, and the most detailed of the three, named the school as Horizon Continuation School, so that is the one I am going with.  I even used Google Earth to look at the address and sure enough, the white school building is at the end of a strip mall, not really a traditional school campus as I know it.  Hopefully this is the correct name for this school.

Conflicting stories surround this act of school violence from the Caribbean. One story is that an 18-year-old male identified only as P.S. slapped a 16-year-old male identified only as C.W. for bumping into him.  C.W. retaliated by stabbing P.S. twice in the chest and then fleeing the school.  The second story said the two boys had a disagreement earlier (whether it be in the day or in the week, I don't know.)  P.S. was in a classroom at the school when his teacher left the room.  After she left, C.W. rushed in and stabbed P.S. twice in the chest.  C.W. then fled the school by jumping over the school gate and running away.  P.S. was rushed to St. Maarten Medical Center and listed in critical condition.  Police began searching for C.W.  Two weeks later, P.S. was identified as Steve Thervil in a news story from The Daily Herald of St. Maarten.  According to that story, the stabbing took place around 9:30 a.m. and Steve didn't know he was stabbed until he looked down and saw blood on his shirt.  He was stabbed six times by his classmate.  After spending ten days in the hospital Steve is determined to encourage his fellow classmates to resolve their differences peacefully.

Sayano Horimoto, a 12-year-old sixth-grade girl, started taking classes at the Uji Shinmei branch of the Kyoshin chain of cram schools on March 25, 2005.  Cram schools, called juku, are used by students to prepare for entrance exams at the next level of education.  Each classroom in the cram school has a security camera in it.  One of her teachers was Yu Hagino, a 23-year-old senior law student majoring in criminology at Doshisha University.  He works part-time as a teacher at the juku.   By the beginning of April, Yu had expressed concerns over Sayano in a school journal, stating, "I cannot get along well with Sayano as far as educational guidance is concerned."  In August, Sayano's mother called the school to complain about her daughter having the longest counseling sessions with Yu of all his students.  She also said he scolded her often.  At the end of November, Yu berated Sayano during a conference with her main teacher.  This caused Sayano to cry on her way home.  At the beginning of the this month, Sayano stopped taking Yu's classes.  A few days later, Yu went shopping and he picked up two knives and a hammer from a local store.  Today, the school was scheduled to trial test sixth-graders from 9 a.m. to noon and at Sayano's mother's request, Yu was removed from supervising the test by school officials.  Yu went to the school anyway, with the two knives and hammer.  He entered a classroom with 13 students and told them he will be conducting survey on the Japanese courses he had taught them.  He told the students who had been in his class to move to another room.  A dozen of them got up and left the room.  Only Sayano remained in the room.  Once the two were alone in the room, Yu unplugged the security camera, locked the door, pulled out a 29-centimeter (11-inch) knife and stabbed Sayano in the face and neck.  After he stabbed Sayano, Yu called the police from his cell phone, the call coming into them just after 9 in the morning.  Another teacher persuaded Yu to unlock the door and come out of the room.  When he opened the door, he was still holding the cell phone and there was blood on his hands.  Sayano was rushed to the hospital where she died.  Police arrested Yu and confiscated the knives and hammer from him.  Yu confessed to killing Sayano, saying, "I had been troubled over how to teach her.  I thought it would be better if she would disappear."  Police charged Yu with her murder and violating the Law to Control the Possessions of Firearms and Swords.  A mental evaluation of Yu ruled that he suffers from Asperger syndrome.  However, he was still found competent to stand trial.  On Tuesday, March 6, 2007, Judge Makoto Himuro sentenced Yu to 18 years in prison for the premeditated murder of Sayano Horimoto.

Thursday, December 15, 2005

In an eerie similar fashion to Brenda Spencer from January 29, 1979, a 14-year-old boy in his Roermond house opened fire on students at a primary school across the street.  Fortunately, the boy was using an air gun and not a sniper rifle like Brenda.  He fired upon the innocent children from the attic window.  Panic ensued on the playground as teachers and parents scrambled to move the children to safety.  One child was slightly injured in this shooting.  The boy stopped shooting when the police arrived at the home.  He was captured and detained.

Thursday, December 15, 2005

Students began arriving at 8:00 this morning as they normally do.  Unfortunately, their normal day was shattered when an unnamed 12-year-old seventh-grade girl and an unnamed 15-year-old ninth-grade girl got into a fight.  The fight climaxed when the younger girl pulled out a 12-inch butcher's knife and stabbed the freshman co-ed in the right leg.  Math teacher Johnsteven Melfi was leaving a classroom when he heard the older girl scream, "I've been stabbed."  The injured girl was on the floor with blood flowing from the wound.  He asked her who stabbed her and she pointed to the seventh-grader girl standing behind him.  Johnsteven turned and the young girl started coming toward him.  He told her to drop the knife and she did.  Johnsteven then held on to the young instigator and picked up the knife.  He then called over Steven Louis, another teacher. Steven put the young girl alone into his classroom and took possession of the knife.  Johnsteven ran downstairs to tell the principal, vice-principal and nurse.  The nurse went to tend to the injured girl while Johnsteven called the police.  The injured girl was taken to University Hospital for treatment.  The instigator was arrested and charged with second degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon in the 4th degree.  She is being held at the Hillbrook Detention Center. Onondaga has a student body population of 450, no metal detectors and no school resource officer.  Since the two girls are from the junior high grades, I am cataloging this as a junior / middle school.

After the boys junior varsity basketball game, a fight between several students broke out in the school's parking lot.  Apparently, one or more of the students brought more than school spirit to the game that night as gunfire resonated through the cold night air and all those involved in the melee.  One of the bullets struck a male student in his right thigh.  His friends took him to Wilmington Hospital for treatment.  The fight didn't affect the varsity game inside and play continued with Mount Pleasant loosing to Howard High School 46 - 38.  Police are searching for the shooter.

Earlier today, a fight broke out between three high school girls.  The fight didn't injure anybody, but the feelings of angst continued to boil.  At the end of the school day, the trio continued the fight in the parking lot.  Naomi Pulliam-McCalister, the 32-year-old mother of one of the girls, arrived at 3:40 to pick up her 15-year-old daughter and noticed she was involved in the fight.  Naomi took matters into her own hand and waded into the fight with a knife.  She stabbed the two girls attacking her daughter in the chest to end the fight.  The injured girls are 15-years-old and 16-years-old.  Another 16-year-old girl was nicked by Naomi as well.  The two girls who were stabbed were taken to Children's Hospital.  The knife wielding mother and her daughter then left the school as the news story reports that police began looking for the attacker.  By the end of the day, Naomi surrendered to police.  Martin Luther King Jr. High School is one of Detroit's most prestigious schools.

Classes ended at 3:40 this afternoon and most of the students went home.  However, several of them had to wait for the city bus to come at 4:00 before they could leave the campus.  As they waited, a car pulled up to the city bus stop at 103rd Street and Racine Avenue.  A passenger in the car fired into the crowd of students and adults.  A 17-year-old male was grazed in his shoulder by the shotgun blast while a 16-year-old male was shot in the eye.  Neither of the males were students at Julian High.  A 17-year-old female student, with abrasions near the bridge of her nose, was taken into the school and then transported by ambulance to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.  The older male was also taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center while the younger male was taken to Stroger Hospital.  In a couple of hours police had a description of the car and names of several people they believed participated in this shooting.

This morning Christopher Penley, a 15-year-old eighth-grader, brought a pellet gun to school in his backpack.  Christopher had painted it to look like a real gun.  Maurice Cotey, 13, and one of his friends saw the gun and Maurice persuaded the other to report the gun to school officials.  This caused a scuffle between Christopher and Maurice.  Christopher was able to move Maurice near a closet door and turned him around.  Christopher pointed the gun at Maurice who tried to grab it.  Christopher pulled it back and Maurice was able to grab hold of the gun.  He twisted the gun back toward Christopher and put the gun to his legs.  Christopher then kicked him into the closet where the scuffle continued for a brief time.  Our young instigator then ran from the classroom.  The police were called while he traversed the campus with the gun saying he was going to kill himself.  Sheriff deputies cornered Christopher in a restroom and tried to talk to him.  To the deputies, the pellet gun looked like a 9mm Beretta handgun.  Christopher continued to exhibit suicidal tendencies by saying he was going to kill himself.  At one point he put the gun to his neck as deputies tried to talk to him.  During the conversation, the boy also pointed the gun at the deputies three times.  After the third time, Seminole County Sheriff, Lt. Mike Weippert, fired at the suicidal teen.  The look on our young instigator's face led Lt. Weippert to believe the boy was about to take some sort of action against the deputies.  The bullet struck Christopher in the forehead, above his left eye. This was about 9:30 in the morning.  Christopher was rushed to Orlando Medical Regional Center where he was declared brain dead the next day.  On Sunday, Christopher was officially declared dead. It wasn't until then that the sheriff deputies were able to determine that Christopher was carrying a pellet gun.

JJ de Jong Lower Primary School, Atteridge, Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Patrick Chabadi and Bella Mokalapa are caterers in Atteridge and planned to caterer a party this weekend.  Unfortunately, Bella, 34, made a mistake with a food order.  Patrick was enraged over this mistake.  The two exchanged heated words earlier this week about the whole ordeal.  Bella also works at JJ de Jong Lower Primary School as a secretary.  Today, Patrick stormed into the school and dragged her out of her office.  When they stopped they were in full view of over 70 students, mainly from Grade 0, 4 and 5.  The students ranged in age from five to nine.  Patrick then shot her in the head at point-blank range with a 9mm pistol.  Grade 4 math teacher Debora Mabaso saw Patrick shoot Bella through a classroom window.  He started to approach her room and she cried for her students to get under their desks.  While she was doing this, she heard the gun fire one more time.  Patrick had turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.  As he collapsed to the ground, the children went hysterical.  Debora rushed to Bella's side and picked up pieces of Bella's skull.  She held them to Bella's head as another teacher went to get the  school's bakkie.  Debora held Bella's skull together as she was rushed to Kalafong Hospital where trauma doctors spent over two hours trying to stabilize her.  Bella is fighting for her life.  Frantic parents arrived and anxiously milled about outside the school as teachers tried to calm the traumatized students.

This evening around 8 p.m., two cars were in the parking lot behind the school when Eric Nelson, 17, got out of his blue Ford Taurus and climbed into a cream-colored Lexus occupied by 20-year-old Raymond Montgomery and 19-year-old Antonio Page.  A few minutes later, Raymond and Antonio began shooting each other as they sat in the Lexus.  One of Raymond's bullets struck Eric in the upper chest as he sat in the Lexus.  Raymond was shot in the leg by Antonio.  At this point, both cars began to flee the parking lot.  The Lexus raced off down Dana Avenue and then south on Interstate 71.  At some point in time after the shooting, Eric got out of the Lexus and stumbled down Dana Avenue and collapsed at the intersection with Madison Road.  Police responded to the shooting and found Eric in the street and had him transported to University Hospital for treatment.  At the same time as police arrived on the scene, Raymond was being dropped off at University Hospital for his gunshot wound to the leg.  (There is no mention whatsoever of anybody getting out of Lexus in any of the source news stories, but apparently they did.)  Police speculated that a good Samaritan brought Raymond to the hospital.  Police arrested Antonio later that evening.

This morning during break time, two 16-year-old seventh-grade girls were in a bathroom at their school.  One of them, O. K., asked the other Y. A., if she was smoking.  Y. A. claimed she was not smoking and an argument began.  The heated exchanged of words turned physical when O. K. pulled out a pen knife and stabbed Y. A. in the shoulder and leg.  Teachers heard Y. A. scream and rushed in.  They took her to Adana Specimen Hospital where she was treated.  Police came to the school and took O. K. to a Young Offenders department.  There they released a statement saying O.K. suffered psychological problems and that she had previously argued with Y. A. over another topic.

Around 7:45 this morning, 16-year-old Aaron Henderson was dropped off at the Monticello Street entrance to his high school.  As he walked to the school building itself, a car with the rear passenger window rolled down, pulled up to him and he exchanged words with the car's occupants.  Aaron then turned and headed toward the school.  Seconds later, the passenger in the rear of the car pulled out an assault rifle and fired off five rounds.  Aaron was struck in the buttocks and leg.  School security guard Ty Harrell was able to pull the sophomore into the school and out of harm's way.  Aaron was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital for treatment.  Police began looking for a silver Dodge Intrepid with heavily tinted windows.  They found the car late Tuesday.  On Wednesday, March 8, 2006, police announced they are looking for Brandon Murray, 22, and Thomas Beck, 23, in connection with this school shooting.  Police received a tip on Thomas's location on Monday, March 13, 2006.  He was arrested at the home of a female friend a short time later.  Police said that Thomas was the driver of the Intrepid while Brandon was the gunman.  At the end of the week, on St. Patrick's Day, Brandon turned himself into police.  Brandon faces charges of criminal attempt homicide, aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy.

Rumors were spreading around town about 17-year-old Cassandra Graffee.  As to what those rumors were, the news story doesn't say, but I would wager a good bet it wasn't about Cassandra becoming the next prom queen.  This afternoon at 4:10, Cassandra sent a classmate into the school to get a 14-year-old female classmate who was spreading the rumors while she waited on the school's front walk.  When the younger girl came outside, she and Cassandra began to struggle with each other.  The struggle consisted of pulling hair and shoving each other.  The younger girl was able to get away from Cassandra and went back inside the school.  Cassandra didn't follow as she had been told to stay off school property for an undisclosed reason.  The younger girl came back out of the school building and Cassandra confronted her again.  This time she was carrying a pellet gun.  Cassandra shot the younger girl 20 times, in the head, neck and chest.  When she was out of ammunition, a 12-year-boy who was with her, shot the wounded girl four more times with his pellet gun.  The police arrived and found a container of Soft Air 6-mm plastic pellets, which match the spent pellets found at the shooting.  The younger girl told police she knew the guns were fake and that the pellets didn't hurt that much.  She was not treated for the injuries she sustained.  Cassandra was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, disorderly conduct while armed and battery, all misdemeanors.  The 12-year-old boy was turned over to his mother.

Yesterday, Robert Wilkens' 15-year-old son slapped a 14-year-old male classmate.  Today, the 14-year-old his brother and their friend, 19-year-old brother Maurice Jackson, went to the school to retaliate against the unnamed 15-year-old boy.   Robert, 42, was at the school today for an unrelated matter.  After that issue was resolved, Robert and his son came across the 14-year-old, his brother and Maurice.  The two groups began to quarrel inside the school and were told to leave.  Once outside, the quarreling continued and became physical on the front steps at 11:30.  During the melee, Robert stabbed Maurice.  Police came and restored order.  Maurice's friend took him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with stab wounds to his side and a punctured lung.   Because of the wound, the hospital called the authorities.  Police arrested Robert and charged him with aggravated and simple assault.  They also arrested his 15-year-old son and charged him with assault.  As the police were interviewing Maurice they found 33 bags of crack cocaine on him.  He faces a charge of possession of narcotics with intent to deliver.

This morning at 7:45, Vincent Wayne Leodoro, a 14-year-old freshman, opened fire on one of his fellow classmates while they were in the school's courtyard.  Our young instigator fired four shots from a 10mm semiautomatic pistol and all of them struck 16-year-old Joseph Monti, a sophomore, twice in the lower abdomen, once in the chest and once in the elbow.  After the shooting, Vincent fled the scene by walking down the street.  Two other male students followed him briefly, that is until Vincent turned around and pointed his gun at them.  The two boys ducked out of site and flagged down a police officer who was heading to the school.  Our young instigator was then cornered by police at Charlie's BBQ, a nearby diner just 800 yards from the school.  During the brief standoff, he put his handgun to his head, but didn't pull the trigger.  Police arrested Vincent and began looking for a motive for this shooting.  Joseph was taken to Mercy Medical Center where he underwent surgery to have the bullets removed.  As the police investigation continued, it was discovered the two boys knew each other and had a beef against each other, but whether or not that led to the shooting is still unclear.  Because of his age, Vincent was turned over to the Douglas County Juvenile Department.  He is charged with attempted murder, first degree assault, illegal use of a firearm and illegal possession of a firearm.  However, because of his age, he cannot be tried as an adult in the state of Oregon.  Roseburg's population is just over 20,000.

This is a rare entry to my list, domestic violence plays out at a school.  Nandipha Bobotyani is a very competent, active and talkative student in her night school classes.  She works as a janitor at the Bonteheuwel police station.  Her husband works there also, as a policeman.  The couple was married six years ago and have a 3-year-old daughter.  This evening around 7:00, he shows up at the school with their daughter.  He went straight to Nandipha's classroom and asked the teacher if he could see his wife.  She came out of class and the family retreated to the school gate, where an argument began.  He then pulled out a gun and shot Nandipha in the arm.  She began moving back inside the school and he followed her.  He fired four more rounds into her body, two into her forehead and one into her chest with the fourth hitting elsewhere.  He then picked up their daughter and drove away.  He drove to the home of Nandipha's parents and said to them point blank, "I have killed your daughter."  He then drove to the Mfuleni police station and committed suicide.

Two years ago a male supply teacher was laid off from Colbert de Torcy.  He searched and searched for work but found nothing.  Today, the 33-year-old man took out his frustration on the students at his former place of employment.  This afternoon at 2:30 he armed himself with a fake handgun and went to the school.  School officials allowed him to enter because they knew him.  Once in the school, he made his way to an upper floor study hall and took 21 students and two teaching assistants hostage.  He promised a teacher's assistant that he would do no harm to the students.  His demand to the police was that he wanted to talk to the country's former education minister Francois Fillon about his job problem.  Francois is also the former mayor of Sable-sur-Sarthe.  The students were able to send text messages on their phones and even call their families during the siege.  He held the group for several hours before giving up to police.  As police inspected his handgun, it was then that they realized it was a fake gun.  Sable-sur-Sarthe is 30 miles from Le Mans, famed for its annual 24-hour car race.

Thursday, March 9, 2006

Earlier today, students of Tracy Skywater, a 19-year-old teacher's assistant, called her vicious names.  They even started a rumor saying they wanted to fight her.  Around 3:15 this afternoon, five girls forced their way into Tracy's computer classroom and cornered her.  The five girls, between 11- and 17-years-old, swarmed her and began their attack.  Two of the girls pulled her hair and kicked and punched Tracy.  The school's principal, Mike Gamblin, and another staff member tried to intervene, and Tracy was able to get away from the duo.  She exited the building and took cover in a van, but wasn't fast enough in closing the doors and locking them.  Three of the girls had followed her and entered the van to continue the assault.  Mike and other teachers once again tried to intervene, but one of the girls was able to stab Tracy ten times with a inch-long homemade weapon.  The weapon resembled a dart wrapped in tape.  Tracy was stabbed in the back, arm, leg and shoulder.  She eventually escaped the van and jumped into her cousin's car and fled the school.  She was taken to Birtle Health Centre, but was not seriously wounded.   By the end of the weekend, police arrested a 14-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl and charged them as the primary attackers.  The remaining teachers refused to go to work until an armed security officer could be present at the school.  With the police budget being as limited as it is, the school closed down for at least two days.  On Monday evening (March 13, 2006), police arrested the other three girls, ages 11, 14 and 16.  With all five girls now in custody and expelled from school, a sense of calm came over the Birdtail Sioux.  Teachers returned to the school on Tuesday after being assured of safety improvements.  However, the school will not hold classes until Monday, April 3, 2006.  Tracy has been working at the school, which has only 70 students in all grades, since December and she has said she will not return to the school.  Birdtail Sioux First Nation has a population of about 450, is 48 kilometers north of Virden, Manitoba and 90 kilometers northwest of Brandon, Manitoba.  For statistical purposes, I am counting this as a middle school.  On Wednesday, December 20, 2006, the two primary attackers, who are sisters, pleaded guilty to assaulting Tracy.

Webmaster's note: Although this entry will be part of my April 2006 monthly update (along with all the other acts that happened in March), I didn't actually add this act of school violence to the list until Monday, March 27, 2006, over two weeks after the event.  That's not because of that is when I found out about this attack... No, I found out about this act of school violence on Monday, March 13, 2006 from The Brandon Sun's news story.  It took me two weeks to add this act of school violence to the list because the author of the story, Ian Hitchen, the news editor of The Brandon Sun, Jim Lewthwaite, and the managing editor of The Brandon Sun, James O'Connor, never answered any of my six emails to them asking for more information.  Luckily, I found the CBC News stories and obtained the information I was looking for.  I point this out here just in case any of my visitors would like more information on this act of school violence and were thinking of contacting the newspaper.  Don't waste your time, nobody at the paper will respond to your inquiries.

James Scott Newman, a 14-year-old eighth-grader, was tired of his classmates making fun of him.  He spent a week researching the Columbine massacre on the Internet and was inspired to seek a similar revenge.  Yesterday, his father gave him a bullet collection.  This morning, James sneaked into his parents bedroom and took his father's .38-caliber pistol and three bullets from the collection with him to school.  Snow had fallen over the city last night and delayed the school day by an hour.  Some students had arrived early and were gathered inside a hallway near the cafeteria waiting for classes to start when James went into a restroom and put the three bullets into the pistol.  Just before 9 a.m. he stepped out of the restroom and spotted one of his friends.  His friend told him to put the gun away.  James told his friend to run and then pointed the pistol down the hall.  He found a target, a male student that was opening his locker.  James pulled the trigger twice but no rounds were fired as the hammer fell on two empty chambers.  James and his friend were walking down the hall while he tried to shoot the gun.  Finally, the hammer struck a bullet in the chamber and propelled it, and the remaining two bullets, forward and into the hallway.  The boy was struck in the upper arm and chest and taken to Washoe Medical Center for treatment.  Kenzie McKeon, 14, was kneeling at her locker and was grazed in the leg by shrapnel.  She was treated on site.  Jencie Fagan, a female gym teacher in a nearby room, entered the hallway when she heard the shots.  Jencie verbally confronted our young instigator and convinced him to give up the gun.  When he did, she bear hugged him until additional staff arrived.  Police arrested James and recovered the gun.  James is charged as an adult with one count of attempted murder.

Two boys were using razor knives as they worked on a graphics project in art class this morning at 11:30.  One of the boys had a can of Mug root beer and he teased the other boy by sitting next to him and saying, "Wow, a nice cold can of root beer."  The first boy then took a sip of the root beer.  The second boy lost control of his common sense knowledge and sliced the first boy's pinky finger with the razor knife.  The razor knife was fully extended and blood began flowing from the fresh wound.  The first boy exclaimed, "Jeez, you stabbed me!"  Our young instigator just put his head down.  Patrolman Helvio Silveira arrived at the school and found a trail of blood from the classroom all the way to the nurse's office.  The wounded boy was picked up by his parents and treated by the family doctor.  Helvio interviewed the instigator and this was his answer to the all-important question of why: "I just lost it."  The boy was very remorseful and so Helvio had him taken to Morton Hospital and Medical Center for crisis evaluation.  Afterwards, our young 14-year-old instigator was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and disturbing a school assembly.

American International School, Beit Lahiya, Gaza Strip, Israel

Tuesday, March 14, 2006

Today, twenty Palestinian gunmen shot their way into the American International School and abducted two teachers.  The Palestinians used their guns to blast through the locks on the gates.  The gunmen believed the teachers were Americans, but were in fact from Australia.  The two teachers are Kaye Bennett, a grade one teacher, and Oles Shcharytsya, who teaches science and math. When the firing began, Principal Hendrik Taatgen called for help.  Once the gunmen realized they had kidnapped Australian's and not American's they let the teachers go.  They were held for roughly two hours.  For statistical purposes, I'm going to classify this school as an elementary school since Kaye teaches grade one students.

A fight between two boys working on art project injures one and sends the other to the police.  Very similar to what happened in Taunton just yesterday.  At 12:45 this afternoon, two 15-year-old boys were making collages in their creative foods class when they began to exchange words.  One is a sophomore and the other is a freshman.  The sophomore struck his opponent on the head.  The freshman then raised his hands around the back of his head to shield himself from another blow.  He reacted very quickly and did not drop the scissors he was holding as he put his hands around his head.  The sophomore struck him again.  The scissors left a 1 1/2-inch long gash in the freshman's head.  Blood was everywhere after that.  The injured boy was taken by his parents to Franciscan Skemp Healthcare where he received stitches.  Police arrested the sophomore and charged him with substantial battery.

All day long a boy called a 13-year-old girl a "fat bitch."  At the end of the school day, the young girl had had enough and struck back when they were in the gym.  Instead of words, she used a craft knife with a snap off blade. She stabbed her bully in the arm.  The boy was taken to Starship Hospital with serious tendon damage.  Police took custody of the girl but so far have not found the knife.  They believe one of her classmates or friends may have picked it up.  Under New Zealand law, the young girl cannot be charged because she is under 14.

Today students at the university were supposed to write their first semester exams.  However, since most of them hadn't paid their school fees, the school refused to admit them.  The students gathered and began talking amongst themselves.  Vice-Chancellor Professor Dan Agbonmian sensed the students would turn violent and called for the anti-riot policemen.  Some of the students went to the bank and paid their fees, but were still not allowed in to take the exam.  This infuriated the students and they began to riot.  They burned four cars belonging to their lectors and vandalized the administrative building.  The anti-riot police fired tear gas at the students, but that made them more violent.  The students burned seven more cars and the police fired their guns sporadically at the students.  When order was finally restored, two students were dead and over 75 had been injured, 27 seriously.

Last week 18-year-old senior Natalia Allison "Allie" Holmes was inducted into the National Beta Club, an organization of students who earn As and Bs.  This morning as students were gathering to start another day of school, Natalia climbed out of a dark red van in the horseshoe driveway that is shared between Carolina Forest Middle School and Carolina Forest High School.  She was wearing white sandals, blue jeans and a white blouse.  Minutes later, at 7:50, the driver of the van, 24-year-old Edwin Lee Cornelius, jumped out after her and shoved her to the ground.  He began hitting her and then pulled out a knife and stabbed her seven times.  Edwin then got back in the van and ran over Natalia as he left the school.  Darlene Euler, a parent who had just dropped off her granddaughter at the middle school, was right behind the dark red van and witnessed the horrific attack.  As he pulled away, she honked her horn to get the attention of school administrators and told them she was going to follow Edwin.  Several middle school students and school administrators also witnessed the brutal attack.  While school administrators began to treat Natalia and restore order at the school, Edwin led Darlene on a slow drive around town for about 20 minutes.  At times, she was able to yell out to other motorists, "That guy just killed someone.  I'm following him.  Call police."  The pursuit traversed US 501 and entered the Wild Wing community.  Edwin drove into a cul-de-sac and Darlene tried to get neighbors to help her block the road, but Edwin escaped before the road block was setup.  Darlene lost Edwin for a few minutes, however, by the time she caught up to him, along S.C. 90 near the Jessica Lakes subdivision, the police had found him and were arresting him.  Natalia, who attends CFHS and was within weeks of graduating, was rushed to Conway Medical Center where she died at 8:29.  Police charged Edwin with murder.  Edwin waived bail and remains in jail until a grand jury can be convened in the summer.  It was speculated that Natalia and Edwin were dating, but her best friend didn't know Edwin was a part of Natalia's life.  Conway is about 15 miles from Myrtle Beach.

19-year-old William M. Foster called a sophomore girl last night and threatened to kill her.  Over the phone, she heard him cock a gun.  This morning, the young co-ed told the school's resource officer, Deputy Rony Maurice, of her situation.  Around 10:00 this morning, in the school's sophomore parking lot, Rony spotted William as he backed his car, a white Mitsubishi, into a spot.  Rony blocked him in with his SUV and jumped out.  Rony yelled out, "Let me see your hands! Get out of the car!"  William leaned over to the passenger side, pulled out a 9mm pistol and pointed it at the deputy.  Rony pulled out his .40-caliber Glock and fired one shot at the car, striking it in the hood.  William dropped the gun and surrendered to Deputy Rony.   He is charged with assault with intent to kill, pointing and presenting a gun, carrying a weapon on school grounds and disturbing schools.

This morning a young boy took a handgun to school with him.  As he rode on the bus, he pulled it out and showed it to two male students, friends of his.  One of the boys accidentally fired the gun into the floor of the bus.  The boy and his friends were able to convince the other students on the bus (and the bus driver!) that the gunshot came from a harmless cap gun... and so they continued on to class.  Once they arrived at school, Vice-Principal Jerome Beauchamp had already heard about the shooting.  He confronted the trio.  Jerome began to search one of the boy's backpack, as he did, one of the other boys (but not sure if it is the boy who brought the gun on the bus or the boy who fired it), began running away.  The vice-principal chased him down and tackled him.  The vice-principal then searched his bag and found the loaded handgun.  Police arrived at the school and questioned the trio before releasing them to their parents.  The school suspended the trio from school.  One of the boys is 18 and the other two are under 18.

When school let out for the day at 3:10 p.m., three black teenagers approached 16-year-old Alejo Contreras and asked him for his silver cross that was hanging from his neck.  Alejo refused and the trio then began to attack the Latino student.  The fight attracted a crowd of student watchers.  Alejo suffered several hits and was bleeding from his mouth when the three black teenagers began to scatter.  Andres, Alejo's younger brother, shouted obscenities at them.  Augustine Contreras, a junior and the 17-year-old brother of Alejo and Andres, saw the crowd, saw what the three black teenagers had done to Alejo and joined in with Andres in shouting obscenities.  One of the black teenagers retaliated by turning around and shooting Augustine in the chest.  School police officer Celia Lavender arrived at this point and held back Alejo as she called for backup.  The shooter took off his yellow flannel shirt, shoved it in his backpack and took off.  Augustine was transported to UCLA Medical Center where he died.  Police chased a young male on foot into the Oakwood area of the town, an area known for gang violence.  The setup a perimeter and began looking for the man who they believed killed Augustine.  Unfortunately, the shooter remains at large.  The student population at Venice High School is nearly 2,700.  On Friday, June 9, 2006, police arrested 21-year-old Cymone Donyeal Turner on an unrelated charge.  They spent the next two months building their case against him and on Thursday, August 10, 2006, Cymone was charged with attempted robbery, unlawful possession of a firearm and the murder of Augustine Contreras.

Way back in 2003, Tywon Newsome and Evan Eskew, both now 21, dated the same girl.  During this time, Evan made some derisive remarks about Tywon behind his back.  Tywon eventually found out what Evan said about him.  In 2004 Tywon was arrested for stealing clothes from L. S. Ayres in Hobart and went to prison for a couple of years.  When he was released, he began to turn his life around.  Because of today's date (6-6-06), many thought something evil would happen.  They were right as Tywon and Evan's path crossed for the first time in three years.  Tywon went to the school to watch his sister graduate while Evan was there to watch a friend receive a high school diploma.   The two young men exchanged words when they saw each other and then left the building.  Evan, his younger brother Isaiah, 18, and their 19-year-old cousin went to Evan's car.  Tywon and his girlfriend got into his car and drove over to Evan's car and confronted the trio.  Tywon and Evan began to fighting, during which, Evan called out to his younger brother, "Isaiah, get my gun, get my gun."  Isaiah pulled Evan's gun from his car and the weapon discharged.  Tywon then ran toward Isaiah and they fought over the gun.  It discharged again and Tywon was struck in the chest.  He fell to the ground just after 9 p.m.  Tywon's girlfriend, DeAnna Edwards, pulled him into his car and drove them from the south parking lot to the school's entrance looking for help.  Evan, Isaiah and their cousin ran from the parking lot, but the trio was stopped by police who were providing security for the graduation.  They saw Evan's bloody clothes and apprehended the trio.  Tywon was transported to Methodist Hospital where he died at 10:45 p.m.  When the graduates and their families left the school, they discovered the parking lot full of police cars and that their school was now a crime scene.  The next day, police released the 19-year-old and charged the brothers with murder and possession of a handgun on school property.  On Thursday, May 31, 2007, murder charges against Evan were dropped by the prosecutors.  He is still facing the charge of possessing a handgun on school property.  On Friday, June 8, 2007, a Lake County jury found Isaiah guilty of reckless homicide and possession of a firearm on school property.  He faces a maximum term of 11 years in prison.

Three Hispanic male teens, two 18-years-old and one 15-years-old, began fighting at the Red Lion (a store of some sort I am assuming) over a girl.  As the fight grew more violent, the participants moved it behind Linden Park Elementary School   When the fight continued, several bystanders had gathered to watch the spectacle. The trio fought with large, sharp knives and inflected lots of damage on each other.  Jose Rodriguez, one of the 18-year-olds, received deep stab wounds to his legs.  Daniel Quiroz, the other 18-year-old, was stabbed on his arm and stomach, the most seriously injured of the three.  The 15-year-old was cut on his head.  Police arrived at the school just after 2 this morning and found Daniel covered in blood with difficulty breathing and the 15-year-old nearby.  Jose was not at the scene.  Paramedics transported Daniel and the 15-year-old to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.  When they arrived, Jose was already in the emergency room getting stitched up and it was there that he told the police he had been involved in the schoolyard fight.  The case got new life at the end of September when police arrested Gerardo Martinez, a 21-year-old man on charges of aggravated battery.  Police said Jose, Daniel and the unnamed 15-year-old were not fully cooperating with their investigation in its infancy.  Now police have enough evidence to prove that Gerardo stabbed all three of the boys.

During break today, 10-year-old Carl Forbay refused to give two 13-year-old boys his soccer ball.  The bullies followed him into the bathroom, demanding the soccer ball all the way.  Once inside, one of the bullies pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed Carl three times in the buttocks.  Carl's friend had also gone into the restroom to help defend Carl.  He got into a fight with one of the bullies.  The bullies told Carl that if he said anything they would kill him.  Carl and his friend returned to class, but the teacher was not there.  Since he couldn't sit, he laid down on his stomach.  His fellow classmates asked him what was wrong and he told them.  They told Carl to go to the principal's office.  He did, but was too scared to report the bullies.  The principal finally got the full story from Carl and called the bully into the office.  He denied stabbing Carl.  Carl then took a taxi home, arriving around 4 p.m.  His mother rushed him to the doctor's after removing his blood-soaked pants and seeing the stab wounds.  Carl's mother also called the police and they promised to arrest the bullies.

The 2005-2006 draws to a close today with a double homicide.  It's not a good way to end the year.  This morning, Alfredo Rodriguez drove his wife, Ada, to work at Young Middle Magnet School.  Before leaving around 5, they said good-bye to their oldest son, Luis, 19.  Although the new school year doesn't start until Thursday, August 3, 2006, Ada, the lunchroom manager, and 30 teachers would be there at the school for a planning day.  At 6:20 a.m., a deliveryman found Alfredo lying in front of the SUV and Ada lying by the front passenger side of the vehicle.  They had been shot to death by an unknown assailant.  Alfredo, 54, was born in Cuba and worked as a laborer.  Ada, 38, had worked at the school since 2003 and was born in Puerto Rico.
